“Statement on participation in airbus design and manufacturing programme Government is pleased to announce that it has accepted an invitation from Airbus Military for South Africa to participate in the A400M multi-role mission transport aircraft design and manufacture programme. In return, the Government has committed to procure and take delivery of between 8 and 14 aircraft as the programme matures between 2010 and 2014. The cost of 8 aircraft would be Euros 837 million. Negotiations are currently underway between the Government and Airbus Military to determine the terms of agreement for the country’s participation. At the same time, Denel and Aerosud have engaged Airbus Military to develop the details of industrial partnership contracts around specific dedicated work-share packages that will become effective as soon as an agreement has been signed between Government and Airbus Military. We are confident that a Memorandum of Agreement will be signed in the coming weeks. Further announcements will be made as soon as more information becomes available.” For further information, visit the South African Government’s official information site at http://www.info.gov.za/speeches/2004/04121009151003.htm.

The nerve-centre of a military airlifter is the loadmaster work station, which controls and monitors all aspects of loading, unloading and aerial delivery. The A400M will bring new standards of performance together with greater ease of operation in handling all of the loadmaster’s tasks.
To learn more about the new, versatile airlifter visit Airbus Military on stand A14 at Farnborough. Adjacent to the A400M display you can also see the Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport), candidate for the UK’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA).

The innovative campaign, which has been appearing in national and international aerospace and defence publications since the end of last year, is based on graphic illustrations of the military airlifter’s versatile capability and uses easily identifiable visual metaphors to carry the messages. The work was presented to the jury in the Brand / Product Advertising category on behalf of Airbus Military by the advertising agency MGA, who created the campaign and who were required to show "evidence of strategic thinking and effective creative execution…" and "powerful work positioning products and brands in front of target audiences..." as well as "clear expression of benefits and USPs (Unique Selling Propositions)". Thirty-seven agencies submitted over 100 advertising entries for the awards and although the Airbus Military campaign did not win its category, the campaign made the short-list of six best entries and achieved the “Highly Commended” accolade. The judges clearly appreciated the fresh and unusual approach in advertising to defence-related audiences.

ILA Berlin provides a focal point where the countries of eastern and western Europe come together to share their common enthusiasm for aviation and Airbus Military looks forward to welcoming visitors to the stand. A new large-scale cut-away model of the A400M showing the aircraft's latest design configuration will be displayed as well as a dynamic audio-visual demonstration of the aircraft's capacity and performance. There will be a full-size cross-section of the A400M showing a graphic representation of a typical large load and a small projection theatre will present a "virtual visit" taken from the engineering design database, which shows the structure and systems of the aircraft. A press briefing on the A400M aircraft and industrial programme will be held in the Room "B" at the ILA Media/Press Centre from 11:00am to 12:00am on Wednesday, May 12th.

The A400M contract signature on May 27th 2003 ensured the sale of 180 aircraft to the seven European launch customers. Since then, Airbus Military has increased its marketing efforts around the world, targeting a number of potential export customers for the new-generation airlifter. Asian Aerospace provides a point of contact for the countries of South-East Asia and Australasia and Airbus Military looks forward to welcoming visitors to the stand. A large-scale cut-away model of the A400M will be displayed as well as a dynamic audio-visual demonstration of the aircraft’s capacity and performance. There will also be a “virtual visit” taken from the engineering design database, showing the structure and systems of the aircraft. A press briefing on the A400M aircraft and industrial programme will be held in the EADS chalet, Row “D” 4/5/6, from 10:00am to 11:00am on Thursday, February 26th.

This contract represents the third significant procurement milestone of the A400M programme after the engine and propeller selection, both made by Airbus Military in 2003. It represents another major step in the preparatory phase of the new airlifter programme and will enable the detail design in this area of the structure to be frozen. The A400M landing gear system is designed for the rigours of short and soft-field landings. Each main gear consists of three independent twin-wheel assemblies housed in the aircraft’s aerodynamic fuselage sponsons, thus providing six large-diametre wheels on each side. Its “high-flotation” characteristics enable repeated operation into unprepared strips having a surface hardness as low as CBR 6, (defined as low-plasticity clay and equivalent to that of a muddy football pitch). An additional feature of the A400M landing gear system is its ability to “kneel” when on the ground thus reducing the crown angle of the rear ramp in order to facilitate the loading of large vehicles. The first set of landing gears will be delivered in 2006 to the A400M final assembly line in Seville.
