08 August 1999 08 August 1999 08 August 1999 06 June 1999 21 September 1999 With the decision in principle from the seven Governments involved in the A400M programme expected by the end of the year, the second half of 1999 is proving a period of intense activity for Airbus Military. On the techincal side, activities are proceeding to refine the man-machine interface in Aerospatiale's research simulator. Unlike other Airbus types, the A400M's primary flight instrument will be its head up display (HUD). Work is proceeding to integrate the HUD, which is a fold-away screen that provides the pilot with all the information he needs to fly the aircraft safely under all conditions without taking his eyes off the external view. Photograhed here is a colourised view through the HUD. Photographs have just been made available of the wind tunnel models being used in both high and low speed tests. Tests are continuing throughout Europe, and shown here is the low speed model currently being used in Switzerland for the investigation of various configurations for air delivery conditions. 21 September 1999 Airbus Military is displaying at the 4th International Defence Industry and Civil Aviation Fair in Ankara, Turkey, from 28 September to 1 October. Airbus Military Company is present with a stand in the Turkish Aerospace Industries pavillion. TAI is a partner in Airbus Military Company and is responsible for the Forward Centre Fuselage, the Nose Landing Gear Bay and Doors as well as the Rear Cargo Doors, Ramp and Elevators of the A400M. 08 August 1999 Low speed wind tunnel tests are currently being pursued in 3 European wind tunnels in support of the A400M programme. Full span models are being used in UK and Switzerland to refine the wing parametres, particularly in relation to low speed characteristics and engine installation. A third set of tests is also under way in the DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Airbus, Bremen wind tunnel using a half-span model with full power simulation to optimise high lift devices. All three sets of tests are running concurrently during this month. 08 August 1999 During the bid assessment phase (February - July 1999) the representatives of the A400M Partner Nations raised a total of almost a thousand formal questions (971). The questions divided into three main categories: Technical (including Certification/Qualification and ILS) issues, Commercial/Contractual issues and Programme Management and Quality issues. The majority (over 750) fell into the broad Technical category. Responses to all these questions have been provided through the Airbus Military team in Toulouse. Since the answers have been provided in the frame of contractual discussions, they are considered to be legally binding. In the next phase, some of the technical responses will be converted into Aircraft Specification wording changes. 08 August 1999 At a mid-year milestone review that took place at a meeting of the FLA Policy Group in Paris on 27/28 July, the Nations' representatives advised Airbus Military Company senior management that they have completed their initial assessment process. The assessment started after delivery of the A400M proposal in January and has involved three rounds of clarification discussions with the potential customers as well as detailed analysis of the Airbus Military and competitive bids. The Policy Group confirmed that A400M remains in the competition and that they will proceed to detailed contractual discussions in the second half of the year. There was no indication of the preferences of the individual nations at this stage, but Airbus Military was congratulated on its robust proposal and was assured that the potential customers were taking it extremely seriously. The final few months of the millennium promise to be a period of intense activity for the Airbus Military team. The current schedule calls for a decision in principle by the Ministries of Defence by the year end, followed by a formal announcement in January 2000, a final round of contractual negotiations between January and May, and a "window of opportunity" for contract signature between May and July. 06 June 1999 Airbus Military Company is exhibiting at Le Bourget 12-20 June 1999. A real-time display using the CADDS5 compuer-aided design package being used to design the A400M will be demonstrated on the Airbus Military stand E17, situated in Hall 2A.
An interactive walkround of the A400M is on show as well as the latest documentation on the aircraft and programme.
